Don't know why it costs as much as it doesn. It only serves a few purposes.
Desirability:
It's the best in its class.
Sound:
I've done an A/B comparison with the D112 and the Beta52. The AKG won hands down. Both had the same amount of bass response. The AKG just had a little more attack without having to add EQ. Also the Beta sounded a little more honky (unwanted mids). With the AKG, I didn't have to add as much EQ to get a decent sound.
Overall:
Can't find anything wrong with it.
